Better Care for Your Richmond Home's Wood Floors?

For years when getting estimates for wood floor refinishing I have heard professional re-finishers lament the fact that oil soap, urethane-based waxes or similar products had been used for wood floor care. These products permeate the grain and make refinishing much harder and some adverse results may not be correctable in your final floor finish. The article linked below covers how to clean wood floors, protection from sunlight to prevent discoloration, type of vacuum to use, use of mats, alternatives for a new finish, and so on.

One item not mentioned that is very important, especially in older homes, is avoiding humidity build-up in a home's living space. Excess humidity in addition to working HVAC systems harder and other adverse affects can also damage your wood floors. When wood floors absorb enough moisture the floor boards "cup" or curl up on each side. This can be felt when you walk across your floors without shoes. Cupping" can occur to such a degree that floors cannot be refinished or a uniform finish cannot be obtained. A good moisture barrier in your crawl space is a simple solution to "cupping" and other excessive humidity issues in your home. I'll cover crawl spaces including moisture barriers soon.
